Advantages of Herbal Remedies

It has always been known that herbs can be used as a medicine. The use of herbal remedies dates back thousands of years. In the modern western society though, herbs have declined in use with the advent of western pharmaceuticals and the growth of western medicine and technology. However, more recently, people are starting to look towards herbs again and away from synthetic pharmaceuticals. There are certainly plenty of advantages of herbal remedies. Herbs are often substantially cheaper in price than pharmaceuticals. Some herbs may prove just as effective if not more so than prescription or OTC drugs, at a fraction of the cost.

One of the important considerations is that of side effects. Most every drug you can think of comes with side effects. While not all herbs are side effect free, some are very well tolerated. For example, chamomile is an herb which usually has zero side effects in most individuals. It is used to relax both the nerves and the digestive system. Peppermint is another commonly used, extremely safe herb which is ideal for soothing upset stomachs and reducing nausea. Ginger is also ideal for stomach maladies, and is so safe that it is recommended for most pregnant women suffering from morning sickness.

As you know, herbal remedies are very versatile in nature. They come in many different varieties. You can buy loose dried herbs, or grow your own and dry them at home. There are countless varieties of herbal teas, sold right beside traditional black tea bags at your local supermarket. There are also therapeutic teas which can be ordered online or purchased at health food stores. Some people prefer their herbs in capsule form. You can often find blends of herbs in easy to swallow gelcap form. Tincture is another form in which herbs are offered. With a tincture, you use a few drops on your tongue.

A good way to learn more about herbal remedies is to consult check some books on the subject. You can find a variety of books about herbs at your local bookstore or library. One great title is Prescription for Herbal Healing: An Easy-to-Use A-Z Reference to Hundreds of Common Disorders and Their Herbal Remedies by Phyllis A. Balch. Another choice you might want to take a look at is The Herbal Home Remedy Book: Simple Recipes for Tinctures, Teas, Salves, Tonics, and Syrups by Joyce A. Wardwell. This book is especially good if you are interested in growing your own herbs and making your own remedies.
