Herbal Remedies: Bronchitis
![]() |
Bronchitis is a condition that involves the lung. In this condition, the bronchial tubes in the lung become inflamed. Some of the symptoms are tightness in the chest, a wheezing sound upon taking a deep breath, and lots of coughing. If bronchitis is bacterial in nature, antibiotics may be required. However, the majority of cases are viral, which means antibiotics won't do any good. Therefore, many people are wondering about herbal remedies bronchitis can be alleviated with. There are several which may be helpful for the uncomfortable symptoms caused by this condition.
The first group of herbs that may offer help for bronchitis are those in the expectorant category. An expectorant loosens congestion, making it easier to cough up. Mullein, horehound and horseradish are all examples of expectorant herbs. Mullein contains saponins, while horehound contains a helpful substance called marrubiin. Horseradish is also famed for its expectorant properties, in addition to being a commonly used condiment for cooking.
Anti-inflammatory herbs are another type of herbal remedy that can be used to fight symptoms caused by bronchitis. One of the best anti-inflammatory herbs which offers relief for sore throats and coughing is slippery elm. Slippery elm is most often used in tea or lozenge form and provides a soothing coating for the throat. Marshmallow, most commonly known as a food item, is also good for soothing and moisturizing dry throats and quieting coughs. These herbs are best used for dry coughs, while expectorants are best for wet coughs.
In addition to herbs, dietary changes and vitamin supplements may also benefit those with bronchitis. You should avoid dairy products if you have bronchitis, as they increase the level of mucus production. It is very important to drink plenty of clear fluids to help flush the mucus from your system and keep your body properly hydrated. A multivitamin can help you get the nutrients you need while your body fights the virus.
When it comes to herbal remedies bronchitis, you should be able to find herbs in health food stores in various forms. If you want to make tea, loose herbs or herbs in tea bags are a good choice. You might also find special blends especially for bronchitis in capsule or pill form which contain several different herbs. It is extremely important to consult with your doctor before using any herbs for any medicinal purpose as some of them may cause allergic reactions or interactions with other medications.
