What are the Most Beneficial Herbal Remedies?

There are many herbal remedies which can benefit you if you have an ailment. But what are the most commonly used remedies? The truth is, there are a few herbs which stand above the others when it comes to popularity and effectiveness. The following six herbs are examples of some of the most widely used in the world of alternative medicine today:

Chamomile: A soothing cup of chamomile tea is good for an upset stomach, menstrual cramps or frazzled nerves. The chamomile flower belongs to the ragweed family which may trigger allergies in sensitive individuals.

Peppermint: Peppermint is also good for the digestion. It is an ideal tonic after large meals. Peppermint is also commonly used for nausea. The most common way to take peppermint is in tea or hard candy form. Most people can tolerate mint quite well although it may exacerbate acid indigestion in some.

Dong Quai: Dong quai is commonly used for relief from uncomfortable menopausal symptoms. It is also used to treat PMS. Other uses of dong quai include for hepatitis, headache, shingles, constipation and high blood pressure. While it may not work for everyone, it is an integral staple of Eastern medicine.

Licorice Root: Licorice root is used not only as a popular flavoring for candy and liquor, it is also used as a medicinal tonic. Thought to aid the the elimination of toxins from the body, licorice root contains therapeutic amounts of magnesium, silicon and thiamine. For the purposes of detoxification it is sometimes combined with milk thistle in supplement form.

Ginseng: There are several different types of ginseng, including American ginseng and Siberian ginseng. This herb is most commonly used to boost mental capacity and energy. However it is also sometimes used for a variety of other purposes such as reducing high blood sugar or treating PMS symptoms.

Echinacea: Echinacea is one of the most beneficial herbal remedies as well as one of the most commonly used. It is a member of the daisy family and is thought to reduce the duration and severity of cold and flu symptoms when taken as soon possible after they occur. Echinacea can be taken in capsule or tincture form. Individuals with sensitivity to members of the daisy family should use echinacea with caution.

An important point is that before you start taking these or any other herbal remedies for any purpose, you must consult with a doctor or herbal expert to avoid interactions or allergic reactions from occurring.
